The architectural team's primary objective was to enhance the functionality and aesthetic unity of the 75-square-meter dwelling for its inhabitants. Their solution involved the introduction of a distinctive blue-stained wooden core, a central element that cleverly consolidates various amenities, including the main entrance and a custom-designed banquette seating area.
Addressing the challenges posed by the original, fragmented floor plan, which included several enclosed rooms and one devoid of natural illumination, the designers embarked on a bold transformation. Founders Ester Bruzkus and Peter Greenberg opted to eliminate the pre-existing fireplace and all internal partitions, thereby establishing an expansive, open-concept environment. This new layout strategically positions the circulation path around the striking blue core. This bespoke timber fixture not only offers integrated wall paneling and ample storage but also discreetly conceals the staircase while simultaneously extending the communal areas. Peter Greenberg emphasized that removing the fireplace and screening the stairs with shelving repositioned the dining space as the heart of the apartment. The blue joinery, crafted from wood stained to preserve its natural grain, harmonizes beautifully with the lighter sky-blue tones of the adjacent staircase and the sloping ceiling, creating a visually cohesive interior.
The ingeniously designed blue core houses the apartment's entrance, leading into a snug, low-ceilinged cloakroom that then opens dramatically into the more expansive and luminous main living area. Greenberg noted that this deliberate contrast between the dark, compressed entry and the subsequent open space significantly enhances the perceived size and airiness of the primary living quarters. Adjacent to this central blue element, the existing staircase ascends to a private roof terrace, offering panoramic vistas of Prenzlauer Berg's rooftops, complete with integrated wooden benches that double as storage for outdoor furnishings. Inside, the living area is further enriched by custom-built cabinetry on the opposing side, featuring a full-height closet and shelving, alongside mirrored panels strategically placed to amplify the sense of openness. A versatile sleeping zone, discreetly positioned beyond these cabinets, can be secluded from the main living space by a light-blue curtain that retracts seamlessly into the cabinetry, with the bed's headboard cleverly incorporating a desk for a home office setup. This design ensures both privacy when desired and unimpeded cross-ventilation throughout the apartment. Furnishings, including a bespoke butter-yellow sofa and other decor, were meticulously selected by Bruzkus Greenberg's commercial agency, Studiocoucou, with various blue accents tying the entire scheme together. Mirrored surfaces distributed throughout the apartment further contribute to the illusion of expanded space, including an existing column clad in mirrors to subtly integrate it into its surroundings.
